ALUMNI MEET 2025 – A JOURNEY OF GRATITUDE AND RENEWAL

Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School, Smit, Shillong – East Khasi Hills

The year 2025 marks a historic milestone in the life of our beloved alma mater, Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School, Smit, as it celebrates the Jubilee of its establishment. The Jubilee was inaugurated on 9 December 2024, and its grand conclusion is set for 10th–12th November 2025. As part of this year-long celebration, the Alumni Meet 2025 was joyfully held on 30 August 2025—a day that will forever remain close to our hearts.

When we look back at the pages of the school’s enrolment register, we humbly recognize that 1,250 students have graduated from Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School, Smit. It was through the initiative of our dear Rev. Br. Albert Longley Dkhar, our present Principal, that this great gathering became a reality. Over 250 alumni returned with pride and gratitude to their second home—the place that shaped their lives.

The gathering was blessed with the presence of two special guests:

Rev. Fr. Edmund Gomes, one of our esteemed former Principals, and

Rev. Fr. Sylvester Synrem, the present Director of the school.

In his deeply moving address, Fr. Gomes reminded us of the humble beginnings of our school, when resources were scarce but the spirit of hard work, respect, and discipline was abundant. He urged us to form a vibrant alumni association and to give back generously what we had once received from this institution. His words brought to life the Gospel truth: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

Fr. Sylvester Synrem enriched the gathering with prayer and blessing, invoking God’s abundant grace upon our lives, families, and works.

A highlight of the day was the passionate presentation by Rev. Br. Albert Longley Dkhar, who reminded us that alumni are not merely “former students,” but torchbearers of Don Bosco. He inspired us to carry the family spirit of Don Bosco wherever we go—in our workplaces, families, and communities—living out the Preventive System of education that we had received here.

During the assembly, we formally elected the first office bearers of the Don Bosco Smit Alumni Association:

President – Mr. Baggio Kharumnuid

Vice President – Mr. Banteinam Mylliemngap

Secretary – Mr. Kynsai Kharkongor

Treasurer – Miss Iarilinlisha Kharkongor

As newly elected President, I, along with my team, resolved to draft a constitution with the guidance of Br. Albert Longley and to co-opt other members for greater collaboration. Our first commitment was to ensure continuity by organizing regular meetings and programmes in partnership with the school.

The day’s celebration was made even more memorable with cultural performances, songs, and dances, beautifully presented by alumni, teachers, and present students. The gathering concluded with refreshments, providing us with the joyful opportunity to reconnect, rekindle friendships, and relive our cherished school memories.

As alumni, we left the campus deeply grateful for the formative years we received at Don Bosco Smit. We pledged to remain united, to plan activities, and to carry forward Don Bosco’s dream in our lives. The words of St. John Bosco continue to guide us: “Remember that education is a matter of the heart.”

On behalf of all alumni, I affirm with pride and gratitude that the spirit of Don Bosco is alive in us. His educational system—rooted in reason, religion, and loving-kindness—continues to bear fruit in our lives and in the lives of present students. The Jubilee is a reminder that our past is blessed, our present is full of opportunities, and our future is filled with hope.

With hearts full of gratitude, we echo the Psalmist: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy” (Psalm 126:3). May the family spirit of Don Bosco continue to unite us, inspire us, and help us shine as beacons of light for society.

Mr. Baggio Kharumnuid
