When the First World War broke out in 1914, the Salvatorian missionaries were asked to leave the fruitful fields of Shillong. Their missionary works were left unattended till the Salesians of Don Bosco arrived in 1922 to begin their work in the field of evangelization. The hard work and missionary zeal of its leader, Mons. Louis Mathias spread in and around Shillong. It was during this time that the Salesian missionaries used to visit Mawlai for their daily oratories, and that was how in 23rd May, 1931, the seed of education that was Sacred Heart Boys School, was planted in Mawlai in a rented house of Mrs Sylli Massar as the missionaries felt the need to educate and evangelize. The seed grew into a young plant when the Opening Permission for classes VII and VIII was realized on the 31st March, 1960, by the Education Board of the Assam Government. The School continued to flourish till the 26th December, 1962, when it was fully recognized by the Assam Government. Classes VII and VIII were upgraded to classes XI and X and the Opening Permission for classes IX and X was granted on the 21st September, 1963, and was fully recognized by the Assam Government vide letter No. SEBA/Recog/New/63/1352dt:23-9-1964. The first batch of HSLC students appeared in the 1965 Board Examinations, and the passed result was 100%. Apart from good results in the academic field, the School had also brought laurels to the State by being selected for the Subroto Mukherjee Cup twice, and some students were even selected for the National Boxing Games where they were winners in some categories. This is all due to the hard work and dedication of the principals, teachers, students and the school as a whole.
