The 79th Independence Day Celebration cum 1st Interschool Grand Finale 2025 was held with great pride and enthusiasm at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Mawpdang, in collaboration with the Mawpdang Sports Club.

The programme began with the warm welcome of the Chief Guest, Shri G.L. Mawlong, Officer-in-Charge of Diengpasoh Police Station, and the Guests of Honour — Shri Artist Kharumnuid, Headman of Mawpdang Village; Shri Robinson Kharumnuid, Secretary of Mawpdang Village; two judges from the Police Department for the March Past and Patriotic Act competitions; Fr. Sebastian Tirkey, Principal of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School; the Principals of Tynring Higher Secondary School and Don Bosco Secondary School, Mawkasiang; the Head Teacher of St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Mawiong; members of the School Managing Committee; and members of the Mawpdang Sports Club.

The Chief Guest hoisted the National Flag, after which students from various schools, along with parents and villagers, joined in singing the National Anthem. This was followed by the March Past, led by Commander-in-Chief Simon Felix Syiem, with contingents from all participating schools in the 1st Interschool March Past and Patriotic Act competitions. In total, there were seven contingents — three boys’ and four girls’ — with the Officer-in-Charge saluting them.

In his address, the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation in building a bright and beautiful nation, reminding the gathering that students are the backbone of the country. The March Past was followed by the Patriotic Act competition, in which four schools presented inspiring performances depicting various aspects of India’s heritage and patriotism.

A friendly football match was then held between the EC of Mawpdang Sports Club and the EC of Mawpdang Village, with the Sports Club emerging victorious in a penalty shootout. After lunch, the audience enjoyed a special musical performance by Miss Lakyntiew Syiem and her group, who presented a song dedicated to the state of Meghalaya and the Khasi community.

At 1:00 p.m., the most awaited event — the Final of the 1st Interschool Football Tournament — began between Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Smit, and St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong. St. Anthony’s won the match 2–0. The final match was graced by Local MLA Shri Heavingstone Kharpran, who addressed the gathering, speaking on the importance of sports, teamwork, and coordination between students and teachers. He praised the organisers for conducting such a grand and successful event.

Champion – Tynring Presbyterian Higher Secondary School

Runner-up – St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Mawpdang

March Past (Girls):

Champion – Don Bosco Secondary School, Mawkasiang

Runner-up – St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Mawiong

Patriotic Act:

Champion – St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Mawpdang

Runner-up – Don Bosco Secondary School, Mawkasiang

Football Match

Champion - St Anthony's Higher Secondary School, Shillong

Runner- up - Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Smit

The event witnessed the participation of over 2,000 people and was marked as a resounding success, fostering both patriotism and sportsmanship among the community.
